Anne Gruner Schlumberger
(Photo Lambrakis)

As a granddaughter of an Alsatian industrialist, Anne Gruner Schlumberger (1905 - 1993) grew up in a family in which art had a dominant place: her father, Conrad, was a musician and her uncle Jean was a famous writer. Great scientist, her father and his brother Marcel created the company for electric prospecting that became the multinational Schlumberger LTD. The contribution of this exceptional, enlightened and visionary woman in various fields like art, architecture, education and science is undeniable; she created libraries for children in Greece and France, the Schlumberger foundation for Education and Research, or the musical academy of Villecroze.

This summer, Dinan is glad to receive Anne Gruner Schlumberger’s collection and the works of art of major artists of the 20th century that constitute it. A real passion for art impelled Anne Gruner Schlumberger (1905-1993) all along her life. According to her encounters with painters and sculptors, particularly in New York during the Second World War, Anne Gruner Schlumberger created her collection “in spite of her will”. Victor Brauner, Max Ernst, Giacometti, Dubuffet and Picasso became her friends and she added their works of art to her collection. She also added extraeuropean works: Engravings by her friend Roger Vieillard and some sculptures of Yassilakis Takis and François-Xavier Lalanne.

She also created the Foundation of the vine arbours (Fondation des Treilles). She transformed the property she inherited from her aunt, a “landscape from the end of the world”, into a place for research, encounters and creation for artists and scientists. In this haven of peace, she received artists, mathematicians, Nobel Prices… At her death in 1993, the major part of her collection was given to the Foundation.

The exhibition Collection de passions - Passion de collections (Collection of passions – Passion for collections) intends to honour Anne Gruner Schlumberger and her passion for art. The opportunity is given to discover the artistic favourites, the passion and the intellectual curiosity of this patron. The selection is organised around four themes: myths and beliefs, the human being, nature and objects. This confrontation between works from various fields is a perfect introduction to the history of art of this period and perfectly illustrates the passage from surrealism – and from this mythology of unconsciousness – to more formal researches.

This year, Dinan’s museums would like to highlight the notion of collection and the specificity of their composition and celebrate two events: Indeed, 100 years ago, the collections of the museum moved to the castle and twenty years ago, Yvonne Jean-Haffen gave her work to the city. Public collection, collection of artists, private collection are the three parts of this exceptional programming. In this trilogy, the partial presentation of Anne Gruner Schlumberger’s collection is the opportunity to comprehend the collection of a patron and her friendships. Works of art of major artists of the 20th century, using varied mediums, are a perfect introduction to the history of art of this period and take part in this policy of cultural decentralization that the city of Dinan has been leading for four years.
